Handwriting in Foundation Stage

pre cursive

This is the font we use in Foundation Stage at Eastfield. We call it pre-cursive as it is the best style that will make the transition into joined writing or cursive writing much easier.

We focus on the lower case letters initially and practise every day within our phonics lessons. The way to help your child with their writing is to remember that each letter begins on the line and sits on the line. Some letters have high parts and some have low parts that go beneath the line.

Before children are able to hold a pencil we have many activities in the Foundation Stage that aim to strengthen and develop fine motor skills; activities such as playing with playdough, using clothes pegs, using tweezers, sewing and threading with laces all develop this.
