Using the whole part part method the children practically use blocks that stick together. In this video the whole number is 10. Part of 10 has been taken away and hidden under the tissue. The child is asked to work out which 'part' of 10 has been removed. Using the whole and 10 parts diagram the child works out that becuase he has 3 in his part then 7 muct be under the tissue. 

The child can also read the written number sentence or story 10 - 7 = 3. They may say "the whole number is 10, 7 have  been taken away so that leaves 3.
